Oh, the Places You Can Read!
Friday, March 1, is Read Across America Day—and all of our Get Georgia Reading Campaign communities are encouraged to participate!
Read Across America is a reading motivation and awareness program hosted by the National Education Association (NEA) that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.” You can celebrate Read Across America Day any way that you choose!
- Contact your local school, library, bookstore, or other community partner to celebrate reading in your community.
- Distribute donated books to young children.
- Ask your mayor or other local elected officials to recognize the benefits of reading with a proclamation.
- Host a Read-A-Thon and invite people to take turns reading a special book throughout the day.
- Get local athletes or community leaders to issue reading challenges to young readers.
- Invite teachers and principals to dye their hair green, dress up as Thing 1 and Thing 2, etc. to boost their students’ reading.
- Let students make Cat in the Hat hats and whiskers.
- From artwork to fact sheets to media tips, these great resources will help you plan and promote a Seussational reading event.
- Alert your local media about the events you are planning and how you are supporting—and celebrating—reading all year long!
- Check out these great book lists from NEA to discover terrific titles to read aloud to engage and inspire young readers.
- Read your favorite Dr. Seuss book to your child.
So… be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray, or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,” go celebrate Read Across America Day!
Send photos from your community event to GGR@gafcp.org, and be sure to use the hashtags #GetGAReading and #ReadAcrossGA with your social media posts.
