Preventing Summer Learning Loss—DIY Summer School
Any child who doesn’t engage in educational activities during the summer loses about two months of grade level equivalency in reading and mathematical computation. Educators and researchers refer to this as summer learning loss or summer brain drain.
To help prevent summer learning loss in Georgia, Bright from the Start: Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) is presenting DIY Summer School: Prevent Summer Brain Drain on its website and through Facebook and Twitter. These daily tips for families are based on the Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards. For instance, play with sidewalk chalk by having your child practice writing letters of significance or drawing shapes with guidance; or fill a pan with water and have your child guess which objects will float and sink.
