Read Across Georgia Month Kicks off March 3
Gov. Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal are going to kick off Read Across Georgia Month at a press conference on Thursday March 3, 2016, at 1 p.m. in the North Wing of the Georgia State Capitol.
Department of Early Care & Learning Commissioner Amy Jacobs, Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods, Coy Bowles from the Zac Brown Band, members of the Georgia Children’s Cabinet and partners from the Get Georgia Reading Campaign will gather to celebrate with the governor and first lady.
This year, Mrs. Deal will launch Bowles’ new book, Will Powers: Where There’s a Will There’s a Way, an autobiographical story that reflects his musical journey. It’s designed to encourage students to practice and work hard at everything they aspire to do. Together, they hope to encourage students of all the things you can do when you learn how to read.
Mrs. Deal launched the Read Across Georgia initiative in 2012 to support Gov. Deal’s goal of increasing the percentage of children reading at grade level by the end of third grade. The governor proclaimed March “Read Across Georgia” month in honor of this initiative. The Deals believe parental activities as simple as reading stories aloud to young children can greatly improve and enhance our students’ reading and literacy skills.
